Talk

ImpactTech

We all know technology has changed the way we communicate, shop, listen to music, navigate and park. But how can it change the way we address violence against women, youth at risk, prostitution, and support for patients and people with special needs?

We'll explore this through fascinating, groundbreaking examples from around the world, and through examples whose journeys I was, and still am, part of.

Talk

Tech with Empathy

On the connection between virtual reality, homelessness and building empathy in organizations.

  • What is empathy?
  • Where does it meet us in our professional world as tech people?
  • Why is it an essential professional skill in the new world?
  • And how can tech companies strengthen empathy in the organization through social tech projects?
Talk

AI: opportunities and biases

Artificial intelligence brings huge opportunities to improve functioning, accessibility and wellbeing for all of us, and especially for people with disabilities. But when systems are built without representation, without listening and without testing for bias, they can end up widening gaps.

In this talk we'll dive into the link between AI, disability and technological fairness, and discuss how to build a more inclusive future for everyone.

Talk

Case study: technology versus a social problem

We'll dive into one subject of your choice, through data, examples and shared thinking about harnessing technology to reduce the problem. For example: domestic violence, the sex industry, sustainability and the environment, marginalized populations, people with disabilities, addiction and mental health.

Cisco · Women in Tech

Women mentoring women in high-tech

I led the professional content of a mentoring program by women for women in the high-tech industry, founded by Cisco with the support of the Women in Tech community. The program aims to increase gender diversity in high tech, passing on the experience of seasoned women in a range of roles to women looking to enter the industry or advance in it.

22 pairs took part. I accompanied each pair's series of meetings with professional sessions for the mentors, giving them tools for empathy and listening throughout the program, and tools they could take with them into the workplace and everyday life.

In others' words

What participants say

There are no words for how precise and on point you are, Aya, along with the whole accelerator team. Your amazing fine-tuning makes an unbelievable difference. Anyone who remembers analog radio knows exactly what I mean: when you're almost on the station but one notch off, how much static that makes. And how perfect and meaningful it is when it's tuned just right!

Participant in a social entrepreneurship program for developing a tech idea

I'm a graduate of the first Back2R&D cohort. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your brilliant program, for your support and your blessed work. It's great to know there are women like you in the industry promoting initiatives like this. In the meantime, I was hired by a promising startup thanks to your project!
